On Saturday, September 5 th , St. Timothy Church of Union battled through lightning and storm
delays to defeat Fairview Christian Church of Williamstown in the final game of the church
league volleyball tournament at Grassy Creek Christian Church in Demossville. It was a close
game that pitted the end of season champ—Fairview, and second place season champion--St.
Timothy. Each team won a set, culminating with St. Timothy’s victory in the final game.
The league, which started sometime during the mid-1970s according to league organizer Edwin
Stahl, was first named Pendleton County Volleyball League because the teams would travel to
neighboring counties to play. Initially, games were held on volleyball fields behind Grassy Creek
Christian Church and at other church sites. When two new bridges were built in the Grassy
Creek area, “It left us with two bottoms. We built a softball field on one side and volleyball on
the other,” said Stahl.
This year, twenty teams comprised the league whose season began in mid-May and culminated
the Tuesday before Labor Day. Games were held on Tuesday nights at 7:00 on the Grassy Creek
Christian Church volleyball fields. If interested in participating next season, churches may
contact the church phone number at 859-472-2241 to sign up.
“Generations have played there. It’s neat to see. St. X played for years—Everett and Gloria
Buckler, their kids, my parents...there are hordes of kids playing around catching crawdads and
lightning bugs. Lots of relationships are made.”
